[Video] Software based green screen in OBS - Poor man's technique to hide background without green screen

Below are some excepts from the video on software based green screen. When we do tutorials the background is distracting, so the general practiced solution is to put a green screen and filter green color during editing. Getting Physical screen is not easy for beginner YouTubers especially they are not sure they will continue YouTubing or not. Also space is a problem. Here is an alternative to physical green screen. Its software based green screen

When we do tutorials and screen casts, it is better to include our face in the video along with the screen contents. But showing our face with whatever visible in the background is not good. People normally use a physical green screen behind them and remove that green color while editing. But that physical green screen needs some space and hardware to fix it in place. That may not be feasible if we have space constraints. At least I have that in my apartment. So decided to do some research on can we hide the background without a physical green screen. Hope this will be useful to some of you as well.

The Microsoft teams and Zoom applications are providing a way to hide our background during the conference. But that is not practical when we record just our tutorials without a webinar. So started looking for other alternatives.

One such alternative is Chromacam. The reviews about that software were not that promising. They don't provide a freemium model but a free version with a watermark. Finally decided to test it.
This software creates a software camera that re-transmits the camera stream in our system after removing or adjusting the background.

OBS

Once the camera is working and showing the green screen, let us start the OBS Studio. I am assuming you are already familiar with OBS. Add a scene if not already available. Then add camera which is the Chromacam

Tests done are

  • Hand interruption
  • Head movement
  • Chair movement.
Overall it is working fine for me. Maybe the other reviewers had a low configuration machine or ChromaCam might have improved their algorithm. I would really like to buy it, but only with my second payment from YouTube. The first payment already reserved for something else.
